Project List
This project list should cover everything needed to get Luna back in the water and ready for cruising.
Drivetrain
Replace port engine
It has low compression and the yard says it'll be cheaper to replace than rebuild. They estimate $10k for a new Volvo D-1 engine, plus $5k-$10k to install, depending on install complexity. Based on the previous starboard engine replacement install, it'll probably be closer to $5k.
Alternatively, if you’re interested in proceeding with the OceanVolt electric motor upgrades that we were prepping for, talk to Derek Rupe of OceanVolt, who designed our electrical system.
Tune up Starboard engine - it was running great the last time we had her in the water (2023), but will need a tune-up due to being in storage
Remove diesel from tank and clean fuel system - I’ve added fuel additive to prevent moisture in the tank a couple times, but still the diesel has been in the tank and lines for a couple years
Replace seals in starboard saildrive
Starboard saildrive just started getting water in the oil before we hauled her out - I drained it and put new oil in after hauling out
Port saildrive seals were replaced in 2023, but I’d replace them again since she’s been in storage
Add latches to the engine compartment hatches - The old latches were removed and thus the hatches don’t seal entirely and some rainwater gets into the engine compartments
Fiberglass
Fix fiberglass tabbing that joins the sole to the floor in both hulls - It looks like these were previously repaired as a DIY job, but not sufficiently
Fix port aft cabin bulkhead
It has a couple-inch crack in the plywood between the top of the cabin door and the hull ceiling, which has been there since we purchased her - It doesn’t seem to be a structural bulkhead, but even if it is, it should be a simple fix with wood and bolts
The same bulkhead wasn't attached very robustly to the hull wall (which is part of why we don't think it's structural)...but that section is loose, and should be re-glassed.
*A contractor gave us an estimate of $23,000 for the glasswork, but a couple of people have suggested we could probably get it done for closer to $10,000.
Deck and Hull
Replace or reseal hatches
Aft starboard cabin hatch is cracked and needs to be replaced
Forward port cabin hatch needs to be resealed
Forward port storage locker hatch needs to be resealed
*Leaking hatches are taped up, so they haven’t been leaking
Reseal or replace thru-hulls - we were getting a small amount of water in both hulls the last time she was in the water - not sure if it was sea water or fresh water leaks (see below), but either way, since she’s been in storage a couple years, it’d be good to reseal or replace them
Restring the trampoline - it needs to be restrung, as some of the lines have broken. I've re-tied it in a few places, but the original lines are getting brittle. My plan was to replace it with an offshore trampoline, but the stock trampoline is in great shape, it just needs to be restrung.
Plumbing
Install head sink faucet - have a new one, but it needs to be installed
Replace the head macerator - my plan was to replace the head itself (the current one is French and hard to get parts for), but it really only needs a macerator
Fix or clear the holding tank’s drain valve - it’s either blocked or broken
Rewire the water pump to the house bank - during the electrical rewiring project, the water pump got disconnected - my plan was to move it, as it’s on the bulkhead against the main stateroom and is loud when sleeping - either way, it’ll need to be reconnected
Recommission the water system and repair any leaks - we had an early freeze before winterizing, so there may be some leaks, but haven’t confirmed since the water pump has been out of commission
Sails
Repair rodent damage to mainsail - while in storage, a mouse nested in the stack pack and chewed on part of the mainsail - I haven’t seen it yet, as the yard removed the sail for us, but it shouldn't cost much to repair
Re-rig the sails - they’re in storage, in the yard’s sail loft
Electronics
Re-calibrate auto-pilot - it was turning off occasionally the last few times we had her out sailing
Troubleshoot/reset bluetooth connection to masthead wind vane - it’s a brand new system, but the wind indicator at the helm lost connection with the masthead wind vane the last time we sailed her
Other
Clean the dinghy motor’s fuel system - it’s had fuel in the tank and lines since we put her in storage
Re-commission - do any other re-commissioning stuff needed for a boat that's been in dry storage for a couple years
